Cerros de trincheras were made by various archaeological cultures at various times; they extend from southern Arizona and the southwest corner of New Mexico south into Sonora, Chihuahua, and Durango. They consist of hills or peaks, often somewhat conical, whose slopes support multiple terraces with rock retaining walls (trincheras).
